Skala in Frame

Skala's incredible beaches framed with Mediterranean vegetation.

At least in my experience as an American, Greece has always been the homeland of democracy, economic uncertainty, and the Parthenon. It was only when I met Kate that I discovered that it's also paradise.

The great thing about living in London is that there is so much to see right on your doorstep, and incredibly cheap last-minute holidays to many of Greece's turquoise islands are one example.

We flew to Kefalonia roundtrip and stayed in Skala for a week for £180 per person. Right now, roundtrip flights from my hometown to Kefalonia are $3,000 - $5,000. Fuck that. For that £180, we experienced life off the Greek mainland, some incredible food, Kefalonia's unique history, and of course, soaked up the sun.

Skala is a gorgeous beach town, but there is plenty to do there for people like me who get antsy sitting in a lounge chair for hours on end. History buffs will enjoy an incredibly well-preserved Roman villa from the 3rd century with beautiful mosaics right next to the beach. In 1953, a massive 6.8 earthquake rattled the Ionian islands and destroyed much of old Skala. Hikers can follow a dirt path up into the mountains to see these ruins and cap it off with a freddo espresso from the taverna at the top.

Don’t get me started on the food… Check out the captions in the gallery to learn more about Skala! ◉
